The Irene Jankowski Memorial Fund
The Irene Jankowski Memorial Fund has been established to honor the memory of Katherine F. Jankowski (Irene), who passed away on November 6, 2007.
Irene was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. She attended the Detroit Day School for the Deaf and graduated from Mackenzie High School in Detroit. Irene was an active member of the National Fraternal Society of the Deaf, the Detroit Association of the Deaf and the Lutheran Church for the Deaf in Michigan for many years, as well as the Gulf Coast Deaf Service Center in Florida.
As a student, she was a champion speller and went all the way to the Michigan State competition basing her spelling solely on what she lip-read.
A sweet, caring woman with a cheerful smile, she will be missed by her family: husband, Alex; daughter Kathy; Karen Goss; grandson, Vitali; and many others.
Irene had Optic Atrophy and was deaf-blind for most of her adult life. This fund in her honor will go towards educating people about the deaf-blind and low vision community.
